Electricity Market Competition in NSW

The electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a gradual process of deregulation since the late 1990s. The first step of deregulation was to establish a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered in other states.

The next stage, which occurred earlier in some states than others, was the splitting up of state owned electricity monopolies into several competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to promote a greater level of competition the market was split into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors are responsible for the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and maintain the poles and powerlines, and don't engage directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers are the ones who sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. States have between 1 and 3 distributors and up to 30 retailers.

The market in South East Queensland was fully deregulated on 1 July 2016. This meant that customers could now change to a provider that offered the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in NSW is supplied by the following three distributors

  • Essential Energy
Essential Energy distributes electricity regional and country NSW, and in southern regional QLD.
  • Endeavour Energy
The Endeavour Energy network provides electricity to 2.4 million people in households and businesses located in Sydney's Greater West, the Blue Mountains, and Southern Highlands.
  • Ausgrid
The Ausgrid network supplies electricity to inner, northern and eastern metropolitan Sydney and in the Hunter region and Newcastle.

Tips for using less electricity and lower your bills

Here are some easy to implement ways for reducing your electricity consumption

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Eliminate draughts. Stop cold air or hot air getting in or getting out via gaps under doors or around your windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Wear warmer clothing, instead of turning on the heater (warm socks, booties, beanie, jumper).
  • Use the clothes dryer less often. Instead, hang clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Turn off all appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Reduce your use of lights by making use of the available natural light. Turn the lights off when you leave the room.
  • Use less air conditioning by opening the windows at night-time to let the house cool down, and closing them each morning thus keeping the hot air out.
  • Close doors to rooms that aren't in use, so you only heat or cool a smaller space.
  • Prevent the sun from over-heating your home by closing the blinds and curtains in rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.

FAQ about switching gas and electricity providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens after you've completed the comparison process and decided you want to switch gas and electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new gas and electricity provider allows you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means that you have ten days during which you can change your mind and go back to your old energy provider.
No, definitely not! The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). This distributor will continue to supply the gas and electricity to your house even if you change over to another energy retailer. The retailer issues your gas and electricity bills, but they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy gas and electricity directly from your distributor, you have to go through an energy retailer. You can be certain that when you switch retailers, you won't experience an interruption to your gas and electricity supply because the connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually in less than 24 hours. But the final switchover will not take place until after your current provider has issued your final bill, and that can't happen until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on when your next meter reading takes place. It could take as long as three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and will notify the current provider that you're switching away from them. The actual change to the new provider won't happen straight away, because the current provider will need to read your meter again, one final time. and then send you a final bill. The new provider will start charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor who feeds the energy to your house will continue to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our service is totally free to you. We will, however, receive a commission from the new gas and electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
